Causes of Extreme Hair Breakage

Bleaching, relaxing, perming, repeated colouring, hot tools, tight styles, rough brushing, and extensions can weaken hair until it snaps at different lengths. Dryness and overlapping chemical treatments make the fibre more fragile. Breakage differs from shedding: broken pieces are often shorter and lack a bulb, while shed hairs come from the follicle. Scalp scaling, itch, tenderness, broken hairs close to the scalp, or smooth patches may point to a condition such as Scalp Ringworm. Repeated pulling can contribute to Traction Alopecia.

Pause bleaching, relaxing, and high heat while the hair recovers. Detangle gently from the ends upward, use conditioner, limit tight braids and extensions, and sleep on a smooth surface if friction worsens snapping. Trim split ends to prevent splitting from travelling along the shaft, but remember that trimming cannot repair damaged fibre. A clinician can inspect the scalp and distinguish shaft breakage from hair loss.

Seek assessment for rapid breakage with scalp pain, pus, marked scale, swollen areas, broken hairs at the roots, or visible thinning. Prompt review is useful when tight hairstyles cause tenderness or a receding hairline, because ongoing traction can damage follicles. Sudden patchy loss, fever, or a child with a scaly patch should be evaluated without delay.
