Causes of Dark Neck and Armpits

Acanthosis nigricans often presents with darker, thicker, velvety skin in body folds such as the neck and armpits. It can be associated with insulin resistance and may occur alongside weight changes, diabetes, or some hormonal conditions. The appearance itself does not establish the underlying cause.

Other possibilities include repeated rubbing, shaving-related irritation, deodorant or skincare reactions, and inflammation that leaves darker pigment after it settles. Certain medicines can also contribute. A clinician may look at texture, symmetry, the timing of change, and other symptoms before deciding whether blood tests or a skin examination are appropriate.

Arrange a dermatology or primary-care assessment if the change is new, spreading, or persistent. Bring a list of medicines and supplements, and mention itching, rash, recent weight change, irregular periods, or increased thirst and urination.

Use gentle, fragrance-free cleansing and moisturising, avoid scrubbing or bleaching products, and reduce rubbing from tight clothing. Do not stop a prescribed medicine without medical advice. Once the cause is addressed, a clinician may discuss options such as a chemical peel, laser toning, or topical retinoids; these treatments are not suitable for every skin type or every cause of darkening.

Book a routine appointment when darkening does not improve after removing a suspected irritant, or when the skin becomes thicker, rough, or velvety. Seek prompt medical advice if the change appears quickly, involves many areas, or comes with marked thirst, frequent urination, unexplained weight change, weakness, or a new widespread rash.

Ask whether the texture and distribution fit acanthosis nigricans or another skin condition, whether a medicine or product could be contributing, and whether checking blood sugar or hormones would be useful. You can also ask which treatment is appropriate for your skin tone and whether irritation could make the pigment darker.
