Causes of blood-stained sputum

Inflamed airway lining can release small amounts of blood during a cough. Acute Bronchitis may do this during a short-lived infection. Bronchiectasis can cause repeated bleeding because widened airways hold mucus. COPD can leave airways sensitive and prone to inflammation, while Pneumonia may add fever, chest discomfort, and breathlessness.

Blood may instead come from the nose, gums, throat, or Chronic Sinusitis and mix with phlegm. Pink streaks, red flecks, or brownish staining do not establish the source. Repeated episodes, increasing volume, smoking, lung disease, fever, weight change, or medicines that affect clotting change the urgency.

Contact a clinician promptly if blood-stained sputum is new, persistent, or returning. Record when it began, the colour, approximate amount, frequency, and whether it follows a strong cough. Mention fever, chest pain, wheezing, breathlessness, nosebleeds, and your medicines. Do not use someone else’s Antibiotic Treatment or stop prescribed medicine without advice.

Get emergency help for significant or repeated bleeding, trouble breathing, chest pain, faintness, blue lips, confusion, or rapid deterioration. Urgent review is also needed with severe fever, marked weakness, or a new oxygen problem. Sit upright, rest, and avoid driving if you feel unwell.

Ask whether an airway examination, chest imaging, sputum sample, oxygen measurement, or blood test is needed. Share your smoking or vaping history, recent infections, nose symptoms, lung diagnoses, and any medicine or supplement that affects bleeding.
