Short answer

Sudden frequent urination can be caused by a urinary tract infection, increased fluid or caffeine intake, bladder irritation, diabetes or prostate-related problems.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What may be behind it

A Urinary Tract Infection can cause frequent small amounts, burning, urgency, cloudy urine or lower abdominal discomfort. Passing large volumes with marked thirst may point towards high blood glucose, including Type 1 Diabetes, Type 2 Diabetes or Prediabetes. In men, Prostatitis may cause urinary frequency with pelvic discomfort, fever or painful urination; Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia can make the stream weak, delay starting or leave a feeling of incomplete emptying. Caffeine, alcohol, diuretic medicines, anxiety and pregnancy can also change bladder habits. Chronic Kidney Disease may affect urine patterns, but symptoms alone cannot establish the cause.

What to do now

Note when the change began, how often you pass urine, whether each amount is small or large, and any pain, thirst, fever, discharge or back pain. Drink normally rather than forcing excessive water, and reduce caffeine and alcohol temporarily. Arrange a clinical review for sudden, persistent or unexplained frequency. A clinician may check urine, blood glucose, medicines, kidney function and, when relevant, prostate symptoms. Do not use leftover antibiotics.

When to seek urgent care

Seek urgent help for inability to pass urine, severe lower abdominal pain, fever with back or side pain, vomiting, confusion, blood in urine or feeling very unwell. Emergency assessment is needed for frequent urination with intense thirst, vomiting, deep or rapid breathing, marked weakness or drowsiness, particularly in someone with diabetes.

Questions for your doctor

Ask whether you need a urine test or blood glucose check, whether a medicine or caffeine could be contributing, and what symptoms would indicate infection, diabetes or a prostate problem. Share your bladder diary and current medicines.

Questions people ask

Can caffeine cause frequent urination?

Yes. Caffeine can increase urine production and irritate the bladder, especially when intake changes or is high.

Is frequent urination always an infection?

No. Infection is one possibility; fluid intake, diabetes, medicines, anxiety and prostate or kidney conditions can also contribute.
