Possible explanations

Drinking less, sweating, vomiting, or diarrhoea can make urine darker and more pungent. Certain foods, vitamins, and medicines can alter odour or colour for a short time. A urinary infection may cause a strong smell along with burning, frequent urination, urgency, lower abdominal discomfort, or cloudy urine. Orange or tea-coloured urine with yellow skin or eyes, pale stools, nausea, or right-sided upper abdominal discomfort can occur when the liver or bile flow is affected. Odour alone does not identify the cause.

What to do

Think back to recent fluid intake, heat, exercise, foods, and new medicines or supplements. If you feel well and can drink, take regular fluids and see whether the urine becomes lighter. Do not use leftover antibiotics or stop prescribed treatment without advice. Contact a clinician if the smell or colour continues, or if urinary symptoms develop. Testing may include a urine sample and, depending on symptoms, blood tests.

When to seek care

Get urgent help for confusion, fainting, severe weakness, inability to keep fluids down, very little urine, severe pain, or yellowing of the skin or eyes. Arrange prompt review for fever, chills, flank pain, visible blood, painful urination, pregnancy, or symptoms that are worsening.
