What should you know about causative organism of pneumonia?

Bacterial pneumonia may follow an infection in the airways and can produce fever, cough, chest discomfort, or phlegm. Viral illnesses, including Influenza and COVID-19, can inflame lung tissue and may also lead to pneumonia. Fungal pneumonia is less common and is more relevant in some people with a weakened immune system or particular environmental exposures. Symptoms overlap, so a cough or fever cannot identify the organism by itself.

A clinician may consider your symptoms, examination, recent infections, medical history, and chest imaging. Tests such as a respiratory sample or blood test may be used when the result could change care. Pneumonia itself can cause chills, cough, coughing up phlegm, and fever, but these symptoms can have other causes.

Arrange medical assessment if pneumonia is suspected, particularly when breathing feels harder, fever persists, or you feel markedly unwell. Take prescribed medicine exactly as directed; antibiotics treat bacterial infections, not viral pneumonia. Rest, drink fluids if you can, and avoid smoking or vaping while recovering. Do not use leftover antibiotics because the wrong medicine may delay appropriate care and cause side effects.

Seek urgent help for severe breathlessness, blue or grey lips, new confusion, fainting, severe chest pain, or inability to keep fluids down. A rapidly worsening illness, unusual drowsiness, or very little urine also needs prompt assessment because a serious infection can affect the whole body. Children, older adults, pregnant people, and those with heart, lung, or immune conditions may need earlier review.

Ask which cause is most plausible from your examination, whether testing is needed, how to take any treatment, and which changes should prompt a return visit. Ask when breathing and activity should begin to improve, and whether your existing medicines or conditions alter the plan.
