What should you know about cat nosebleed?

A nosebleed, or [Nosebleed](/symptoms/nosebleed/), often starts when delicate blood vessels inside the nose become irritated or dry. Nose picking, forceful blowing, a minor bump, a cold, or nasal allergy can contribute. [Allergic Rhinitis](/conditions/allergic-rhinitis/) and [Common Cold](/conditions/common-cold/) may cause congestion and repeated blowing. Recurrent or heavy bleeding can have other causes, including medicine effects or [Hypertension](/conditions/hypertension/), so the pattern matters.

Sit down and lean forward so blood does not run into the throat. Breathe through the mouth and pinch the soft lower nose continuously with firm pressure. Spitting out blood is safer than swallowing it. Do not tilt the head back, lie flat, blow the nose or insert tissues deep inside. After bleeding stops, avoid strenuous activity, hot drinks and nose blowing for a while. Seek emergency help if bleeding is heavy, follows a significant injury, causes faintness or breathing difficulty, or continues despite sustained pressure. Children, older adults and people with known blood-pressure problems may need earlier medical advice.
