Treatment depends on symptom pattern, severity, examination findings, age, other conditions, and response over time. A reliever can ease narrowed airways when prescribed, while a preventer targets inflammation and is taken on the schedule provided. Some people need a spacer or a different device to deliver medicine effectively.

Treatment is not only about medicine. Smoke, dust, mould, strong fragrances, and infections can aggravate airways, so reducing relevant exposures may support control. A clinician may also investigate allergy or another cause when symptoms do not fit asthma.

Use medicines exactly as prescribed and ask for a technique demonstration. Keep a written action plan, note changes in cough or wheezing, and attend reviews even when you feel well if a review was requested. Do not stop a preventer, increase doses, or substitute a household remedy without medical advice. Keep inhalers accessible and check their condition as directed.

If symptoms persist, disturb sleep, restrict activity, or require more reliever medicine than expected, contact your clinician promptly. A nebuliser treatment may be considered by professionals during some urgent episodes.

Call emergency services for severe breathing difficulty, blue or grey lips, fainting, confusion, extreme exhaustion, or inability to speak normally. Use your prescribed emergency plan while waiting. Rapid deterioration deserves urgent help even if symptoms initially seemed familiar.

Ask what each medicine does, how long to use it, how to recognise poor control, and when treatment should be reviewed. Ask whether a spacer, allergy assessment, written action plan, or specialist referral is appropriate.
