The name carinii pneumonia is commonly used for Pneumocystis pneumonia, an infection caused by an organism that can affect the lungs when immune defences are reduced. It may develop gradually, with breathlessness during activity, a dry or persistent cough, fever, chills, tiredness, or chest discomfort.
