Cancerous Cyst on the Head: What You Should Know

Pilar cysts develop from cells associated with a hair follicle and often feel smooth, round, and mobile beneath the scalp. They can become tender if inflamed or infected, and several may occur in the same family. A skin lump can have other causes, including an abscess, lipoma, inflamed follicle, or a less common tumour. A lump’s position or feel cannot prove that it is cancerous. Examination is the route to deciding whether imaging, removal, or laboratory analysis is needed.

Do not puncture, squeeze, or repeatedly press the lump; this can irritate it and introduce infection. Arrange a routine appointment if it is new, recurrent, bothersome when brushing, or difficult to see. Photograph it with a nearby ruler for comparison, and note growth, tenderness, drainage, crusting, or hair loss over it. If removal is advised, the clinician can discuss whether the entire cyst wall should be taken out and whether tissue will be examined.

Seek prompt care for rapid enlargement, severe pain, spreading redness, warmth, pus, fever, bleeding, ulceration, a fixed hard lump, or a scalp lump that returns after it was removed. Sudden facial swelling or breathing difficulty needs emergency help. These signs indicate a need for timely assessment; they do not by themselves diagnose cancer.

Ask what features support a pilar cyst, whether the lump needs imaging or removal, how infection would be treated, and whether the removed tissue will be examined. Ask how to recognise recurrence and how to care for the wound.
