Can you lose your taste with a sinus infection?

Much of what people describe as taste comes from smells reaching receptors high inside the nose. Swelling, mucus and blocked nasal passages during sinusitis can reduce that airflow, making food seem bland or flavourless. Facial pressure, cough, fever or a blocked nose may occur alongside the infection. A common cold or allergic rhinitis can create similar congestion, while a sudden or isolated taste change may have another cause.

Rest, drink fluids and follow the treatment plan recommended by a clinician or pharmacist. Saline nasal rinsing may help clear mucus when used with safe water and clean equipment. Avoid smoke and other irritants. Do not start antibiotics without advice, because many sinus infections are not helped by them. Taste commonly returns as nasal swelling settles, but persistent loss should be assessed.

Seek urgent care for swelling around an eye, vision changes, severe headache, confusion, a stiff neck or marked deterioration. Contact a clinician if symptoms are severe, keep returning, fail to improve, or taste and smell remain reduced after the nasal symptoms have settled.
