Can gout be prevented?

Short answer
Gout cannot always be prevented completely, but controlling uric acid and personal triggers can reduce future attacks and joint damage.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Main goal
- Keep uric acid at an individually agreed target.
- Medicine safety
- Do not alter prescribed treatment without clinical guidance.
- Lifestyle focus
- Use sustainable changes instead of severe dietary restriction.
The short answer
Prevention is broader than avoiding one food. The plan may include long-term urate-lowering medicine, regular monitoring, good hydration, gradual weight management where relevant, and review of kidney health and medicines that can influence uric acid.
What prevention is trying to change
Gout develops when urate crystals form in and around a joint, provoking sudden inflammation. Keeping uric acid at the target chosen by your clinician allows the crystal burden to reduce over time. This is different from treating pain only after an attack begins.
Kidney function, body weight, alcohol, diet, dehydration and some medicines may affect uric acid or trigger attacks. Their importance differs between people, so prevention should be based on your history and blood tests rather than a highly restrictive diet assembled from general advice.
Build a realistic prevention plan
Take urate-lowering medicine exactly as prescribed and do not stop it during a flare unless your treating clinician specifically changes the plan. Attend monitoring appointments so the dose can be adjusted to the agreed uric-acid target and kidney function.
Drink regularly unless you have been given a fluid restriction. Avoid crash diets and work toward gradual, sustainable weight change if advised. Notice whether alcohol, large rich meals or dehydration repeatedly precede attacks, then discuss practical adjustments. Never stop a prescribed diuretic or other medicine on your own.
When joint symptoms need attention
Contact a clinician for recurrent attacks, lumps that may be tophi, kidney-stone symptoms, or difficulty following the prevention plan. A hot, swollen and very painful joint with fever, chills or feeling unwell needs urgent assessment because joint infection can resemble gout and requires prompt treatment.
Questions that make prevention more specific
Ask what uric-acid target applies to you, when it will be checked, how to manage a flare while continuing prevention, and whether kidney function changes the medicine choice. Request a review of other prescriptions and a clear plan for side effects or missed doses.

Questions people ask
Can diet alone prevent gout?
Diet can help reduce triggers and support general health, but it may not lower uric acid enough for everyone. People with recurrent gout may need long-term medicine alongside practical dietary changes.
Should urate-lowering medicine stop during a gout attack?
It is generally continued if already prescribed because stopping can disturb uric-acid control. Follow your personal treatment instructions and contact the prescriber if you are unsure or develop a possible side effect.
