Can goitre be prevented?

A goitre is an enlarged thyroid gland. It can occur when the gland makes too much thyroid hormone, too little, or hormones in a usual range while the gland changes in size. Autoimmune thyroid disease, nodules, inflammation and inadequate or excessive iodine can all be relevant. The visible swelling does not identify the cause on its own.

Avoid taking iodine supplements or thyroid products without advice, because excess iodine can also disturb thyroid function. A clinician can assess the neck, review symptoms and arrange thyroid blood tests or imaging when needed.

Use a varied diet and avoid self-prescribing concentrated iodine. Tell a clinician about thyroid disease in your family, medicines, supplements and any change in the neck. Treating an overactive or underactive thyroid may prevent further enlargement in some cases. Follow-up is useful when a swelling has been found, even if it is not painful.

Arrange an assessment for a new or enlarging neck swelling, hoarseness, difficulty swallowing, neck pressure or unexplained changes in weight, heartbeat, heat tolerance or bowel habits. Seek urgent help if swelling causes severe breathing difficulty or sudden inability to swallow.

Ask what may be causing the enlargement, whether your thyroid is overactive or underactive, which tests are needed, and whether medicines or supplements could affect thyroid results.
