Short answer

A diode laser can feel warm, prickly, or like brief snaps, but intense or increasing burning should be reported immediately to the treatment provider.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Expected feeling
Warmth, prickling, or brief snapping

Report intense or increasing burning immediately
Protect skin
Follow cooling and irritation-avoidance aftercare

Why burning may happen

Heat can be felt more strongly when settings, treatment speed, cooling, skin sensitivity, or the target area are not well matched. Recently tanned or irritated skin may react differently. Temporary redness or swelling around follicles can occur after hair removal, while marked blistering, crusting, colour change, or persistent pain suggests a more significant thermal injury and needs assessment.

What to do during and after treatment

Tell the operator at once if the sensation changes from tolerable warmth to sharp or intense burning. The session may need a pause, cooling, or a review of settings. Afterward, use the aftercare provided, keep the area cool, and avoid heat, friction, picking, and irritating products until the skin settles. Do not apply ice directly or treat a blister yourself.

When to seek medical care

Ask for prompt medical assessment if pain is severe or worsening, blisters or open skin develop, swelling spreads, or the treated area becomes increasingly red, hot, or draining. Urgent help is needed for facial swelling, breathing difficulty, or a widespread reaction. Photographing changes can help the treating clinician assess progression.

Questions for your doctor

Which diode laser settings and cooling method are planned for my skin and treatment area? Should treatment be postponed after sun exposure or irritation? What aftercare is appropriate, and who should I contact if a blister or colour change appears?
