What should you know about burning and cloudy pee?

A urinary tract infection can cause burning, urgency, frequent urination, lower abdominal discomfort, and cloudy or strong-smelling urine. Dehydration may make urine more concentrated and darker, though it does not explain every episode of burning. Vaginal or penile discharge, a sexually transmitted infection, stones, medicines, or local irritation can produce similar discomfort. Cloudiness alone is not enough to identify the cause.

A kidney infection is more concerning when urinary symptoms occur with fever, chills, pain in the side or back, nausea, or vomiting. A clinician may assess a urine sample and decide whether further testing or treatment is needed.

Drink fluids regularly unless a clinician has told you to restrict them, and avoid products that clearly worsen irritation. Do not use leftover antibiotics or someone else’s prescription. Record when symptoms began, urine changes, frequency, fever, pain location, discharge, and any recent sexual exposure. Seek medical advice if symptoms continue, recur, or affect pregnancy, or if you have a condition that increases infection risk.

Seek same-day medical advice for fever, flank or back pain, vomiting, visible blood, marked weakness, or worsening symptoms. Urgent assessment is needed if you cannot pass urine, feel faint or confused, or have severe pain. Do not wait for symptoms to settle if you are pregnant or if a child has these symptoms.
