What should you know about buccal cellulitis?

The buccal tissues are the soft tissues of the cheek, inside and outside the mouth. Infection can enter through a break in the skin, an inflamed hair follicle, a wound, a dental problem, or another nearby source. The affected cheek may feel hot, tender, firm, or swollen; redness can spread beyond the original area. Some people also feel unwell or develop a fever.

Facial infections deserve particular attention because swelling can extend into nearby tissues. Diabetes, reduced immune function, or a recent procedure may increase the need for careful assessment. Buccal cellulitis is different from simple surface irritation and should not be diagnosed from appearance alone.

Arrange prompt same-day medical assessment, especially when cheek swelling is spreading, pain is significant, or fever is present. A clinician may examine the skin, mouth, teeth, and nearby structures, then prescribe antibiotics when a bacterial infection is suspected. Take the medicine exactly as directed and complete the prescribed course unless the prescriber changes it.

Keep the area clean, avoid squeezing or puncturing the swelling, and drink fluids if swallowing is comfortable. Tell the clinician about medicine allergies, diabetes, immune problems, dental pain, recent injuries, and recent cosmetic or medical procedures. A dental source may require dental treatment as well as infection care.

Go to urgent care immediately for trouble breathing or swallowing, drooling, rapidly increasing cheek or neck swelling, swelling around the eye, confusion, faintness, or severe weakness. Seek urgent assessment for a high or persistent fever, red streaking, or rapidly spreading redness. These signs can indicate extension of the infection or a serious systemic response.
