What should you know about a BTL ECG machine?

The device turns electrical signals into a tracing that can show heart rate, rhythm and the timing of electrical conduction. It may help assess palpitations, chest discomfort, dizziness or fainting, and may be used before some procedures. An ECG is a snapshot: a normal tracing may not capture an intermittent rhythm problem, and the clinician interprets it with your symptoms and examination.

Wear clothing that allows access to the chest, arms and legs, and avoid applying oily creams where electrodes may be placed. You normally rest still while the electrodes record; the test does not send electricity into your body. Tell the operator about medicines, implanted devices and any skin sensitivity. Ask when and how the result will be explained.

An ECG appointment should not delay emergency help for ongoing chest pressure, severe breathlessness, fainting, blue lips, or a fast or irregular heartbeat with marked weakness. Call emergency services for sudden collapse or symptoms suggesting a heart attack. Arrange prompt review for new recurrent palpitations or fainting even if a previous ECG was reassuring.

Ask what the tracing shows, whether a longer monitor is needed, which symptoms should prompt urgent care and whether medicines could affect the rhythm.
