Bronchitis and chest X-ray: what to know

Bronchitis involves irritated, swollen airways, and an X-ray may look normal even when coughing and chest discomfort are troublesome. The image is more useful for looking for changes that suggest pneumonia, a collapsed area, or another cause of breathing symptoms. Your clinician combines the image with your temperature, breathing rate, oxygen level, chest examination, and symptom history. A persistent cough may need assessment for conditions such as bronchiectasis, chronic cough, or tuberculosis, depending on the wider picture.

Arrange a GP consultation if your cough is worsening, lasts longer than expected, or comes with breathlessness, fever, chest pain, or unusual fatigue. Tell the imaging team if you may be pregnant, and mention any previous chest investigations. During the test, you may be asked to stand still, hold your breath briefly, and remove metal objects from the chest area. Follow the clinician’s advice about fluids, rest, and medicines while the result is reviewed.

Seek urgent medical help for severe difficulty breathing, blue or grey lips, new confusion, fainting, or chest pain that is severe or persistent. Prompt assessment is also needed if you cough up blood, feel suddenly much worse, or cannot keep fluids down. A chest X-ray request should not delay emergency care when breathing is seriously affected.

Ask what your examination suggests, whether imaging is needed now, and what the result would change. You can also ask when to expect the report, which symptoms should prompt a return visit, and whether follow-up testing such as tuberculosis screening is relevant to your history.
