Can bronchitis cause wheezing?

During bronchitis, the airway lining can swell and produce extra mucus. The narrowed passages vibrate as air moves through them, creating a whistling or musical sound, often more noticeable when breathing out. Wheezing is a common presentation of acute bronchitis, but it can also reflect asthma, COPD, allergic rhinitis or bronchiolitis. A sudden wheeze with throat or facial swelling may indicate anaphylaxis.

Sit upright, rest, drink fluids and avoid smoke, dust and strong fragrances. If you already have a prescribed reliever inhaler, use it according to your action plan. A clinician can check whether the sound comes from the lungs and whether inhaler treatment or nebuliser treatment is suitable. Avoid using another person’s medicine.

Get emergency help for severe or rapidly worsening breathing difficulty, blue lips, inability to speak normally, confusion, fainting, or wheezing after a possible allergen with swelling. Seek prompt review for a first episode, recurrent episodes, chest pain, fever or reduced ability to walk and talk comfortably.
