Bronchitis and blood in mucus: what to know

Inflamed airway surfaces can bleed a little after repeated coughing, leaving thin red streaks in mucus. Blood may also come from the nose or throat and mix with sputum. Other causes include bronchiectasis, asthma, a persistent cough, or an infection that needs different treatment. Blood in mucus is a symptom, not a diagnosis, and its significance depends on the pattern and your health history.

Note the colour and amount, how often it appears, and whether it follows hard coughing. Arrange a medical review, particularly if it is new or returns. Drink fluids, avoid smoking and do not suppress a serious breathing problem with unprescribed medicine. Tell the clinician about blood-thinning medicines, nosebleeds, fever, weight change or previous lung conditions.

Seek emergency help if bleeding is more than a few streaks, is increasing, or comes with shortness of breath, chest pain, dizziness, fainting, blue lips or confusion. Prompt review is also needed for a persistent cough, recurrent blood, high fever or worsening weakness. Do not drive yourself if you feel faint or are struggling to breathe.
