Bronchiolitis without fever

Bronchiolitis is inflammation and mucus in the small airways, commonly caused by a respiratory virus. Fever may be absent, mild, or present, and its absence does not rule out bronchiolitis. Look for a runny nose followed by cough, wheezing, faster breathing, or difficulty feeding.

Keep the child comfortable, offer small frequent feeds, and clear the nose gently before feeding. Record changes in breathing, intake, alertness, and wet nappies. Keep the air free from cigarette smoke and vaping aerosols. Do not use leftover antibiotics or cough medicines unless prescribed for this child. Get urgent help if breathing pauses, the ribs pull in strongly, lips appear blue or grey, the child is difficult to wake, or feeding is too difficult to continue. Seek prompt medical advice if wet nappies are less frequent, breathing worsens, or the child is unusually exhausted, even with no fever. Ask which breathing changes matter most, how to maintain fluids, how often to check the child overnight, and what would require emergency assessment. Mention the temperature readings and any change in feeding.
