Bronchiolitis in older adults

How the structures involved in Bronchiolitis differ from normal

Short answer

Bronchiolitis in an older adult can cause cough, wheezing, fatigue, and breathlessness, so early clinical advice is sensible when symptoms change.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

At a glance

Watch closely
Breathing effort, alertness, fluid intake, and ability to do usual tasks
Emergency signs
Severe breathing difficulty, blue or grey lips, collapse, or inability to stay awake

How it may present

Bronchiolitis affects the small airways, where swelling and mucus can make air movement harder. Most people with bronchiolitis notice cough; some also develop wheezing, fever, reduced appetite, or lower energy. In an older adult, illness may show as less activity, new confusion, weakness, or difficulty managing usual tasks rather than a dramatic cough. See [Bronchiolitis](/conditions/bronchiolitis/), [Cough](/symptoms/cough/), and [Wheezing](/symptoms/wheezing/).

Heart disease, chronic lung disease, diabetes, frailty, and medicines that affect immunity can make a breathing illness more concerning. Assessment helps separate bronchiolitis from pneumonia, asthma or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease flare, and heart-related breathlessness.

Support during recovery

Keep the person resting but gently change position and move as tolerated. Offer frequent drinks if they can swallow safely, and provide small nourishing meals. Keep smoke, incense, dust, and strong scents away from the room. Record changes in breathing, alertness, temperature, drinking, and urination so a clinician can judge the trend.

Continue prescribed medicines as directed. Do not borrow inhalers, use leftover antibiotics, or rely on steam that could burn the skin. A clinician may decide whether inhaled or nebulised treatment has a role after checking the person.

Warning signs

Contact a clinician promptly if breathlessness is new or increasing, wheezing persists, fever develops, the person drinks much less, passes little urine, becomes unusually sleepy, or seems newly confused. Call emergency services for severe breathing difficulty, blue or grey lips, collapse, or inability to stay awake. Review [Fever](/symptoms/fever/) if temperature changes are part of the illness.

Useful questions

Ask whether the symptoms fit bronchiolitis or another condition, how to measure deterioration, which medicines should continue, and what support is needed for eating and drinking. Share the person’s lung and heart history, medicine list, baseline mobility, and any new confusion.

Questions people ask

Can bronchiolitis look different in an older adult?

Yes. Reduced activity, weakness, poor intake, or new confusion may be more noticeable than a strong cough.

When should an older adult be assessed?

Seek prompt advice for new or worsening breathlessness, persistent wheezing, fever, reduced drinking, or a clear change from usual behaviour.
