How long bronchiolitis lasts

The illness often begins like a cold, then cough, wheeze, and breathing effort may become more noticeable before easing. Mucus and irritation can leave a cough after the child otherwise seems brighter. Infants may tire during feeds because breathing and sucking compete for attention. Improvement should be judged by easier breathing, better feeds, normal interaction, and regular wet nappies.

A lingering cough does not automatically mean the illness is worsening. A new fever, renewed breathing difficulty, or a child who becomes less responsive changes the picture and deserves medical advice.

Offer small feeds often, clear the nose gently when needed, and keep the child away from smoke. Let the child rest and observe breathing when calm, not only after crying. Note whether feeds, wet nappies, and alert periods are returning. Avoid unadvised cough medicines and do not use a nebuliser unless a clinician has recommended it.

Seek urgent help for blue or grey lips, pauses in breathing, severe chest indrawing, grunting, or difficulty waking. Arrange a prompt review if symptoms are worsening instead of easing, feeding is poor, wet nappies decrease, or wheezing becomes more pronounced.
