Is bronchiolitis contagious?

Bronchiolitis is contagious because the respiratory viruses that cause it can spread through coughs, sneezes, hands and shared surfaces. The illness may look different in each person: an adult or older child may have cold symptoms, while a baby can develop noisy or effortful breathing.

Virus particles can move from respiratory secretions to hands, toys, door handles and feeding items. Close contact makes transfer easier. The infection is not spread by cold air itself. Wash hands before touching the baby, preparing feeds or giving medicines. Cover coughs and sneezes, clean frequently touched surfaces, avoid sharing cups or utensils, and keep symptomatic visitors away from infants. Avoid smoke exposure. Contagiousness does not determine urgency. Seek emergency help for blue or grey lips, breathing pauses, severe effort, or a child who is difficult to wake.
