Bronchiectasis: understanding the medical term

The bronchi are tubes that carry air into and out of the lungs. In bronchiectasis, changes in these tubes can allow mucus to collect. That can contribute to a long-lasting wet cough, phlegm, wheeze, breathlessness or repeated chest infections. The word describes the airway structure; it does not by itself identify why the change occurred or how active the condition is.

A diagnosis is based on the whole picture rather than one symptom. A clinician may assess lung function with spirometry and use imaging, sometimes including a chest X-ray, alongside examination and medical history.

If bronchiectasis appears in a report, ask which airways are affected, what symptoms should be tracked, and whether a respiratory referral is needed. A care plan may include airway-clearance techniques, treatment for infections when prescribed, and review of breathing symptoms. Avoid smoke exposure and do not change medicines without clinical guidance.
