What should you know about bronchial pneumonia X-ray?

Pneumonia can produce cloudy or patchy areas on an X-ray when air spaces contain inflammatory fluid rather than air. A report may describe an opacity, infiltrate, or consolidation, but these terms need clinical context. An early infection may not be obvious, and an abnormal shadow can have causes other than pneumonia. The clinician considers your cough, fever, chills, phlegm, breathing effort, oxygen level, and medical history. A chest X-ray can show the lungs; it cannot identify every germ or replace an examination. COVID-19 and Influenza can cause similar respiratory illness.

Ask the requesting clinician to explain the report in plain language and whether treatment is needed. Take medicines only as prescribed, rest, drink fluids if suitable for you, and avoid smoking. Keep track of temperature, breathing, alertness, and ability to eat or drink. If symptoms continue or worsen despite the plan, contact the service that assessed you. Seek emergency care for severe difficulty breathing, blue or grey lips, confusion, fainting, inability to stay awake, or rapidly worsening symptoms.
