What should you know about bronchial asthma symptoms in adults?

Adults can develop asthma after years without breathing problems, or continue symptoms that began earlier in life. Complaints may be more noticeable at night, during exercise, in cold air, after a viral illness, or at work around dust, fumes or chemicals. A cough may linger after other cold symptoms have gone. Symptoms can be mistaken for reduced fitness, reflux, allergies or another lung condition, so a changing pattern is worth discussing rather than self-diagnosing. Allergic Rhinitis can coexist with asthma and may add nasal symptoms.

Book an assessment for repeated episodes, unexplained breathlessness or symptoms that restrict walking, stairs, exercise or sleep. Note smoking or vaping exposure, workplace conditions, medicines and the timing of attacks. Bring all inhalers to the appointment so technique and use can be reviewed. Do not stop a prescribed medicine because symptoms have settled. A clinician may compare symptoms with examination findings and breathing measurements.

Call emergency services when breathlessness is severe, speech is difficult, lips look blue or grey, you feel faint or confused, or prescribed rescue treatment is not improving the episode. Sit upright and use your written plan while help is arranged. New chest pressure, especially with sweating, faintness or pain spreading elsewhere, also needs urgent assessment because not every adult breathing symptom is asthma.
