What should you know about bromhidrosis armpit?

Short answer
Underarm bromhidrosis is usually managed by reducing moisture and bacterial breakdown, while persistent or sudden odour should be assessed for an underlying cause.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

Why underarm odour develops
Bromhidrosis is a condition in which body odour becomes unusually strong or distressing. Sweat itself has little smell, but skin bacteria can break down sweat and produce odorous compounds. Warm, damp underarms, tight clothing, hair, skin folds and heavy sweating can all contribute. Certain medicines, skin conditions or changes in general health may also alter odour. The smell alone cannot identify its cause, so a clinician may examine the skin and ask about sweating, products, medicines and recent changes.
Ways to reduce the smell
Wash the underarms gently, dry them thoroughly and change damp clothing promptly. Choose breathable fabrics and use an antiperspirant as directed; deodorant masks odour, whereas antiperspirant reduces sweat reaching the skin. Avoid scrubbing hard, layering fragranced products or applying irritants after shaving. If home care is not enough, a clinician may discuss prescription products or treatments such as Botox for sweating or microwave sweat gland treatment. These options differ in how they work, duration of effect and possible skin reactions.
When to seek care
Arrange an appointment if odour persists despite careful washing and sweat control, begins suddenly, or comes with a rash, sores, pain, swelling or discharge. Prompt review is sensible when sweating is new, occurs during sleep or affects the whole body. Seek urgent care for fever, rapidly spreading redness, severe tenderness or feeling faint with heavy sweating.
Questions for your doctor
Ask whether the odour comes from bromhidrosis, excess sweating or a skin infection; which antiperspirant strength and schedule suit you; whether a medicine could contribute; and how injectable or energy-based treatment would fit your goals.

Questions people ask
Is underarm bromhidrosis the same as heavy sweating?
No. Heavy sweating can contribute, but bromhidrosis refers to troublesome odour and may occur with or without excessive sweat.
Can deodorant treat bromhidrosis?
Deodorant can reduce or mask smell, while antiperspirant targets sweat. Persistent symptoms may need a tailored assessment.
