Using a soft cast for a broken ankle

Use it for the period and purpose specified by the treating team. Do not assume that a removable or flexible support permits weight-bearing.

The term soft cast can describe a flexible casting material, a padded temporary support or a removable brace. These devices limit unwanted ankle movement while allowing room for tissue swelling or easier skin checks. The exact construction matters more than the everyday name.

A temporary soft support may be replaced once swelling changes, while certain stable injuries may remain in a removable device. Fracture position and healing are checked clinically and sometimes with repeat imaging; comfort alone does not show that the bone is ready for unrestricted activity.

Keep the support clean and dry unless your care team says the material is washable. Check exposed toes for normal colour, warmth, sensation and movement. Elevate the ankle when swelling builds, and use crutches or another aid exactly as instructed.

Do not push objects beneath the cast, trim padding, tighten straps beyond the fitting guidance or remove a non-removable support yourself. Attend scheduled reviews so fit, skin condition and fracture alignment can be assessed as swelling settles.

Contact the treating service promptly if pain is escalating despite elevation and prescribed relief, the cast becomes wet or damaged, a bad smell or discharge appears, or rubbing causes a sore area. A support that has become very loose may no longer control the ankle adequately.

Get urgent help for blue, pale or cold toes, increasing numbness, loss of toe movement, severe tightness, or pain out of proportion to the injury. Chest pain, sudden breathlessness, or new painful calf swelling also needs urgent assessment.

Confirm whether your support is removable, whether it may get wet, and how to adjust it safely. Ask when weight-bearing can begin, whether follow-up imaging is planned, and when ankle movement or rehabilitation should start.
