Breathlessness Due to Acidity: What to Know

Acid reflux happens when stomach contents move upwards into the food pipe. This can produce burning behind the breastbone, a sour taste, frequent burping, throat irritation, cough, or a sensation of tightness. Irritation around the throat may make breathing feel uncomfortable, especially after a meal, when bending forward, or when lying down.

The feeling is not specific to acidity. Breathlessness can also occur with conditions affecting the lungs, heart, blood, or an allergic reaction. Asthma, acute bronchitis, anaemia, angina, and COPD are examples of problems that may need different evaluation and treatment. The presence of breathlessness does not by itself identify its cause.

Stay upright after eating and avoid lying down soon after a meal. Smaller meals may reduce stomach pressure. Notice whether particular foods, late meals, alcohol, smoking, or tight clothing bring on the burning or breathing sensation, and keep a brief symptom record.

A pharmacist or clinician can advise whether an antacid or another reflux treatment is suitable for you, taking your other medicines and health conditions into account. Do not use repeated treatment to mask unexplained or worsening breathlessness. Arrange a medical review if symptoms keep returning, disturb sleep, cause difficulty swallowing, or are accompanied by persistent cough or voice changes.

Seek emergency help for severe or rapidly worsening breathing difficulty, blue or grey lips, fainting, confusion, or inability to speak in full sentences. Treat sudden breathing trouble with swelling of the lips, tongue, or throat, widespread hives, or wheezing as an emergency because it may be anaphylaxis.

Get urgent assessment for breathlessness with chest pressure or pain, sweating, nausea, a racing or irregular heartbeat, or pain spreading to the arm, jaw, back, or shoulder. These symptoms can reflect a heart or lung problem even when heartburn is also present. If the symptom is new, recurrent, or unexplained, contact a clinician promptly.
