Breast Cancer Awareness Month: useful actions and safe information

Campaigns often use pink imagery, educational events, and fundraising. The most useful messages explain what changes to notice, help people discuss screening based on their own circumstances, and direct anyone with a concerning change toward clinical assessment.

Breast awareness means knowing how your breasts and chest usually look and feel, rather than following a rigid self-examination ritual. Changes worth assessing include a new lump or thickening, nipple inversion or discharge, skin dimpling, persistent focal pain, swelling, or a change in shape.

Awareness messaging should also make room for people living with treatment effects, metastatic disease, uncertainty, grief, or recurrence fears. Pink campaigns can be encouraging for some people and emotionally difficult for others; neither response is wrong.

Use the month to learn your usual breast appearance, check whether you are due for a screening conversation, or write down a change you have noticed. Screening is intended for people without symptoms; a new breast change requires a clinical appointment even if routine screening is not due.

If you support a campaign, check where donations go and whether its information is medically sound. When helping someone affected by breast cancer, offer a specific form of support—such as transport, a meal, childcare, or quiet company—and let that person decide what is welcome.

Book an appointment for a new breast or underarm lump, persistent skin or nipple change, unexplained discharge, or a change that does not settle. These findings can have non-cancer causes, but they deserve assessment based on the change itself, not the calendar.

Seek urgent care for rapidly increasing breast redness and swelling with fever or feeling acutely unwell. Contact your treating team promptly if you are receiving cancer therapy and develop a fever or another symptom covered by your emergency instructions.

Ask which screening approach fits your age, breast history, family history, and previous imaging. If you have a symptom, ask whether diagnostic imaging is needed, what the result means, and what the next step will be if the finding remains unclear.
