BPPV: understanding the medical information

The inner ear contains motion sensors that help the brain keep you oriented. In BPPV, tiny calcium particles can enter a fluid-filled balance canal and alter its signals when your head changes position. Episodes may happen when rolling in bed, sitting up, looking upward, or bending down. The spinning is often brief, though a mild unsettled feeling may linger.

Record which movement starts the episode, how long the spinning lasts, and whether you have hearing changes, headache, or faintness. A GP consultation can assess the pattern and perform appropriate positional checks. When BPPV is confirmed, an Epley manoeuvre or another repositioning technique may be offered; it should be chosen with attention to neck and back problems.

Seek emergency help for new vertigo with weakness, numbness, trouble speaking, severe headache, fainting, chest pain, or inability to stand. Contact a clinician for episodes that do not settle, keep returning, follow an injury, or occur with new hearing loss. Avoid driving or climbing while spinning or unsteady.

Ask whether your symptoms fit BPPV, which side is affected, and whether a repositioning manoeuvre is safe for you. Ask what follow-up is needed if the spinning remains after treatment.
