What should you know about bowel resection operation?

The operation may be performed through several small incisions or a larger abdominal incision. The surgical plan depends on the location and extent of disease, previous abdominal operations, general health, and findings during surgery.

The surgeon removes the affected bowel segment with an appropriate margin of nearby tissue. When surgery is for cancer, nearby lymph nodes are commonly removed for laboratory examination. The remaining bowel ends may be joined in an anastomosis.

A stoma brings bowel through an opening in the abdomen so waste empties into a bag. It may be temporary to protect a new join or necessary for longer-term bowel function. If a stoma is possible, a specialist nurse can mark a practical position and explain equipment before surgery.

After the procedure, pain control, fluids, early movement, breathing exercises, and gradual return to eating support recovery. Bowel habits may be loose, frequent, urgent, or temporarily slow while the digestive system adjusts.

Follow the hospital's instructions about eating, drinking, bowel preparation, and medicines. Make sure the surgical team knows about blood thinners, diabetes treatment, allergies, supplements, sleep apnoea, and previous reactions to anaesthesia.

Arrange transport and practical support for the early recovery period. Practise any breathing or mobility exercises provided, and tell the team before admission if you develop fever, vomiting, a new infection, or worsening abdominal symptoms.

After discharge, contact the surgical team urgently for worsening abdominal pain or swelling, repeated vomiting, fever, shaking chills, a wound that becomes red or drains pus, persistent diarrhoea, or inability to pass stool or gas with increasing discomfort.

Seek emergency help for severe breathing difficulty, chest pain, collapse, heavy bleeding, sudden confusion, or a painful swollen leg with breathlessness. If you have a stoma, urgent review is also needed for a dark or markedly pale stoma, severe pain, or absent output with vomiting and swelling.

Ask which bowel segment will be removed, whether keyhole or open surgery is planned, and how likely the plan is to change during the operation. Discuss the possibility of a stoma, pain control, expected eating and movement milestones, pathology results, and restrictions after discharge.
