Bottom of Foot Skin Cracking: Causes and Care

Short answer
Cracked skin on the bottom of the foot often reflects dryness and pressure, but atopic dermatitis or psoriasis can also contribute.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Typical contributors
- Dryness, thick skin, pressure, friction, or inflammation
- Protective measure
- Moisturise intact skin and reduce rubbing from footwear
Why fissures develop
The heel and other weight-bearing areas can become thick and less flexible, allowing splits to form with walking or friction. Atopic dermatitis may leave skin dry, inflamed, and prone to fissuring. Psoriasis can produce thick scale and cracks, sometimes with changes on other skin or the nails. Moisture inside footwear may soften surrounding skin while friction repeatedly stresses the crack.
How to protect the area
Wash gently, pat dry, and apply a plain moisturiser to intact dry skin. Emollient Therapy can help soften and support the skin barrier when recommended. Wear cushioned, well-fitting shoes and avoid walking barefoot over rough surfaces. Do not cut the thick edge, use harsh acids, or pull at loose skin. Keep any open fissure clean and covered with a suitable dressing.
When to seek medical care
Arrange a review when cracks are deep, recurrent, bleeding, or painful enough to alter your walking. Get prompt help for spreading redness, warmth, swelling, drainage, fever, or a wound that is not closing. If you have diabetes, reduced circulation, or reduced sensation, have a foot crack assessed rather than treating it aggressively at home.
Questions to ask
Ask whether the fissures fit Atopic Dermatitis, Psoriasis, or mechanical dryness; which Emollient Therapy is appropriate; and whether infection or another foot condition needs to be ruled out.
