What a lower-lid stye is

A stye is a painful, localised swelling at the eyelid edge or within the lid. It may cause watering, crusting, tenderness, or a gritty feeling. Eye discharge or redness across the eye can point to another problem, especially when vision is affected.

What to do at home

Wash your hands and hold a clean warm, not hot, cloth against the closed eyelid for several minutes. Repeat regularly and gently clean crusting. Do not squeeze the lump, rub the eye, share towels, or wear contact lenses or eye makeup until it settles. Do not use leftover drops.

When to seek care
