Why a laboratory may use it

Some urine collection containers contain a small amount of prepared boric acid preservative. Its purpose is to help keep the specimen suitable for laboratory processing when there is a delay before analysis. It does not cure infection, relieve urinary symptoms or replace an antibiotic. The container should be treated as a laboratory device, not as a medicine.
