What should you know about bodybuilders stretch marks?

Short answer
Bodybuilders can develop stretch marks when skin stretches during rapid muscle growth, with red or purple lines often fading to lighter bands over time.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

Why training can reveal striae
Stretch marks, also called striae distensae, are linear changes in the deeper skin that can appear when tissue expands faster than the skin remodels. They commonly show on shoulders, upper arms, chest, back, thighs, or hips during a period of muscle gain. Early marks may be pink, red, violet, or darker than nearby skin; mature marks tend to look paler and slightly indented.
Skin type, genetics, hormones, body changes, and corticosteroid exposure can influence risk. Stretch marks are not a sign that training has damaged muscle, and they are not contagious.
Ways to manage their appearance
Moisturiser can ease dryness and itch, but it cannot rebuild the deeper altered tissue. Aim for gradual training and nutrition changes, avoid unsupervised steroid use, and use sun protection because tanning can make contrast more noticeable.
A dermatologist can discuss Carboxytherapy, Microneedling, Fractional Laser Treatment, or RF Microneedling. These procedures encourage controlled skin remodelling; they usually improve texture or colour rather than erase every mark. Selection depends on whether marks are early or mature, their location, skin tone, and healing history.
When marks need review
Seek assessment if marks appear suddenly without a clear body change, spread widely, become painful, bleed, or occur with easy bruising, marked weakness, or other new symptoms. A clinician should also review extensive changes after corticosteroid treatment or supplements with unknown ingredients.
Questions for your doctor
Ask whether the marks are typical stretch marks, which option suits their stage and your skin tone, how many sessions may be considered, what pigment changes are possible, and how to train safely while the skin heals.

Questions people ask
Does muscle gain always cause stretch marks?
No. Rapid expansion can contribute, but genetics, hormones, skin type, and other factors also influence whether they develop.
Can creams remove bodybuilding stretch marks?
Moisturiser may reduce dryness, while procedures can soften appearance; neither should be described as erasing every mark.
