Feeling swollen after a C-section

Puffiness can involve the fingers, face, abdomen, legs and feet. Check whether it is similar on both sides and whether new pain, redness, breathing difficulty, headache or visual symptoms are present.

A caesarean birth combines the fluid shifts of pregnancy with surgery and a period of reduced mobility. Intravenous fluid can contribute to temporary puffiness, and fluid tends to settle in dependent areas such as the lower legs. The operation site may also have limited local swelling during healing.

A leg that becomes distinctly larger, warmer or more painful than the other raises concern for a vein clot. Postpartum pre-eclampsia can present with swelling and high blood pressure, often alongside a severe headache, changes in vision, nausea or pain high in the abdomen. Neither condition should be judged by swelling alone.

Compare both legs and hands, remove tight jewellery, and watch for steady improvement. Gentle walking supports circulation and bowel recovery when your clinical team says it is safe for you. When resting, support your legs and avoid staying in one position for long periods.

Keep the incision clean and follow the wound instructions from your hospital. Do not press deeply on a painful calf or start a diuretic on your own. If you were discharged with compression stockings or blood-thinning injections, use them exactly as taught and report missed doses to the prescribing team.

Call emergency services for breathlessness, chest pain, coughing blood, confusion, fainting, or sudden one-sided leg swelling with pain. Stay with another adult if possible while help is arranged, and do not drive yourself when you feel faint or short of breath.

Arrange urgent postnatal assessment for quickly worsening swelling, a severe headache that does not ease, visual disturbance, upper abdominal pain, vomiting, fever, or a concerning home blood-pressure reading. Promptly report an incision that becomes hotter, redder, more painful, opens or releases fluid.

Ask what change in swelling your team expects next, whether your health history calls for blood-pressure monitoring, and when your wound should be checked. Clarify how long to use prescribed stockings or injections and whom to contact outside clinic hours if symptoms change.
