Body odour in teenagers: what to know

Short answer
Body odour in teenagers often follows puberty-related sweating and can improve with regular washing, clean clothing and suitable antiperspirant.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Common areas
- Underarms, feet and groin
- Helpful habit
- Dry skin before applying antiperspirant
Why it happens
During puberty, sweat glands in the underarms and groin become more active. Fresh sweat has little smell; odour develops when skin bacteria break down sweat and oils. Heat, sport, stress, tight synthetic clothing and leaving damp clothes on the skin can make the smell more noticeable. Body odour is not a sign of poor character or poor hygiene, and a teenager may need guidance rather than criticism.
Practical steps
Wash the underarms, groin and feet daily and after heavy exercise, then dry thoroughly. Apply antiperspirant to dry skin, often in the evening, following its label. Change underwear, socks and shirts after sweating; choose breathable fabrics and wash sportswear promptly. Deodorant masks odour, while antiperspirant reduces sweat. If ordinary products do not help, a clinician can discuss Prescription Antiperspirant or, for persistent excessive sweating, Botox For Sweating.
When to seek care
Arrange a medical assessment if odour begins suddenly, remains strong despite careful washing, or comes with a rash, sores, pain, fever, unusual discharge, marked thirst, weight change or night sweating. Seek prompt care for a rapidly spreading painful skin infection. A clinician can examine the skin, review medicines and decide whether sweating or another condition needs treatment.
Questions for your doctor
Could excessive sweating be contributing to the odour? Which antiperspirant is suitable for sensitive teenage skin? Should a rash or medication be checked? When should we consider a prescription option?
