Body aches and chest tightness: what to know

A viral respiratory illness can cause muscle aches, cough, fever and a tight or heavy chest. Asthma and COPD may cause tightness with wheezing, cough or breathlessness. Acid Reflux can produce burning or pressure behind the breastbone, while anxiety or Panic Disorder may bring chest tightness with rapid breathing, trembling or a racing heartbeat. Angina can cause pressure or tightness, often with exertion, and needs medical assessment. The symptom pattern cannot safely rule out a serious heart or lung cause at home.

Stop strenuous activity and sit upright while you assess the symptom. Use a prescribed reliever inhaler exactly as directed; do not borrow someone else's inhaler. Avoid smoking and note whether breathing, movement, meals, cold air or stress changes the tightness. If symptoms are new, recurrent or unexplained, arrange clinical advice even if they ease. Record fever, cough, wheeze, pain spread, palpitations and the time symptoms begin.

Call emergency services for severe or persistent chest tightness, trouble breathing, blue or grey lips, fainting, confusion, sweating with nausea, or discomfort spreading to the arm, back, neck or jaw. Get urgent help for sudden symptoms, coughing blood, or a very fast or irregular heartbeat. Do not drive yourself if you feel faint or severely unwell. A clinician can decide whether examination, heart testing or breathing treatment is needed.
