BMD DEXA scan: what to expect

The scan estimates how dense your bones are and helps a clinician judge fracture risk. It is different from a standard X-ray, which is mainly used to look for injuries or visible changes. The report is interpreted in context, including age, sex, previous fractures, medicines, family history and conditions that affect hormones or absorption. Premature ovarian insufficiency can influence bone health, so share menstrual and hormonal history when discussing why the scan was requested.

Wear clothing without metal fasteners if possible and tell the imaging team if you may be pregnant or have recently had another examination involving contrast material. Follow the centre’s instructions about supplements and medicines. During the scan, you lie still while the scanner passes over the selected areas; the appointment is usually straightforward. Keep the report and ask when a repeat scan or treatment review is needed.

A scan appointment is not an emergency service. Seek prompt care after a fall causing severe pain, deformity or inability to use a limb, because you may need an injury assessment. Contact your clinician sooner if you develop sudden back or hip pain, or if a fracture occurs with a minor injury.

Ask which bones will be scanned, what the report means for you, whether medicines or supplements affect preparation, and how your result will change follow-up. Check whether an underlying condition or medicine could be contributing to bone loss.
