Blurred vision and numb hands: what to know

The combination may occur during a migraine, a low blood sugar episode, or changes affecting blood pressure. Numbness may involve one hand, both hands, or spread to an arm or face; the pattern and timing help a clinician assess it. A stroke can present with sudden vision change or altered sensation, so do not use the absence of pain to dismiss the symptoms.

If you have diabetes or take glucose-lowering medicine, low blood sugar is one possibility. A migraine may cause visual changes before or during head pain. Hypertension and Type 2 Diabetes can affect blood vessels and vision over time, but symptoms alone cannot identify the cause.

Stop driving and sit somewhere safe. Note when the symptoms began, which eye or hand is affected, whether they are worsening, and any medicines or medical conditions. If you have a glucose meter and diabetes, check your glucose and follow your personalised hypo plan; do not delay emergency help for sudden neurological symptoms. Avoid alcohol and ask someone to stay with you.

Call emergency services immediately for sudden symptoms, facial drooping, arm weakness, trouble speaking, new confusion, loss of balance, fainting, or a severe unusual headache. Urgent assessment is also needed for persistent vision loss, repeated episodes, or symptoms after a head injury. Even if the symptoms improve, a sudden episode can require same-day evaluation.

Ask whether the pattern fits migraine, hypoglycaemia, blood pressure changes, or another neurological problem; what examinations are needed; and how to reduce the chance of another episode. Take a symptom timeline and medication list.
