What should you know about blue dissolvable stitches?

Short answer

Blue dissolvable stitches are absorbable sutures that may be coloured so they are easier to see while the wound heals.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What blue dissolvable stitches mean

Suture colour usually identifies the material or improves visibility; it does not by itself show that a wound is infected or healing badly. Dissolvable sutures are designed to lose strength and break down in the body, although a small end may remain visible for a while. The timing varies with the suture material, wound location, depth, and tension. Mild tenderness, swelling, or a little clear ooze can occur soon after repair, but the wound should gradually settle rather than become increasingly painful.

Caring for the wound

Follow the dressing instructions given after wound suturing. Keep the area clean and dry for the advised period, then wash gently without scrubbing or pulling the thread. Pat it dry, avoid soaking until permitted, and reduce activities that stretch the wound. Never cut or tug a visible stitch yourself. Check the edges each day and protect the area from friction. Ask whether you need wound care and dressing advice or a tetanus vaccination after a dirty or contaminated injury.

When to contact a clinician

Arrange prompt review if redness spreads, pain or swelling increases, pus or a bad smell develops, the wound opens, bleeding continues, or you develop fever or feel unwell. Seek urgent help for uncontrolled bleeding, severe pain, loss of sensation, or a wound caused by a serious injury. A loose stitch is not always an emergency, but the repair should be checked if the wound edges separate.

Questions to ask

Ask what suture material was used, how long it may remain visible, and whether any thread needs trimming in clinic. Confirm dressing changes, bathing and activity limits, signs of infection, and whether local anaesthetic or tetanus protection was part of your care.

Questions people ask

Are blue stitches a sign of infection?

Not usually. Colour can come from the suture material; infection is judged by changes such as spreading redness, worsening pain, pus, or fever.

What if a dissolvable stitch is sticking out?

Do not pull it. Contact the treating clinic, which can decide whether the end should be trimmed or left to soften and fall away.
