What should you know about bloody mucus no cough?

Dryness, a minor nosebleed, gum irritation, postnasal drainage, or forceful nose blowing can mix blood with mucus. Allergic rhinitis and a common cold may inflame the upper airway. Acid reflux can irritate the throat. Lung conditions such as bronchiectasis or acute bronchitis more often produce blood with coughing, so blood appearing without a cough should be checked if its source is unclear.

Check whether blood is coming from the nostril, gums, or throat, without probing the area. Use a humidifier, drink fluids, and avoid smoke and vigorous nose blowing. If a nosebleed is active, sit upright, lean forward, and pinch the soft part of the nose continuously. Arrange an appointment when episodes recur or mucus remains blood-streaked.
