Blood work for liver function: what to know

A liver panel may include enzymes linked with liver-cell irritation or bile-flow changes, along with bilirubin, albumin and other measures of processing and protein production. An abnormal result does not identify one cause by itself. Medicines, alcohol, infections, metabolic conditions and temporary illness can all affect results. Your clinician interprets the pattern, your symptoms and any previous tests together.

Ask whether you need to fast and provide a complete list of prescribed medicines, supplements and herbal products. Do not stop treatment without advice. After testing, arrange a review so the result is explained in context. A clinician may repeat the panel or request imaging and other tests when the pattern needs clarification.

Seek prompt medical advice for yellowing of the skin or eyes, unusually dark urine, pale stools, severe abdominal pain, persistent vomiting, confusion or marked drowsiness. These symptoms need assessment regardless of whether a previous blood result was normal.

Ask which markers were tested, which result needs follow-up, whether any medicine or supplement could contribute, and when repeat testing is appropriate.
