Blood Type Test: What It Shows

Red blood cells carry markers that define the ABO group, while Rh status describes whether the D marker is present. The laboratory checks how your cells react with prepared antibodies and records the result in your medical record. This information supports blood matching before a transfusion and may be relevant during pregnancy. It does not explain tiredness, fever or other symptoms; those may require separate tests for conditions such as anaemia, chronic kidney disease or coeliac disease.

Blood type testing usually needs no fasting, but follow the instructions for any other tests taken at the same visit. Tell staff about previous transfusions, pregnancy history or a known blood-group result. The sample is taken from a vein and you can normally resume usual activities afterwards. Keep the result with your health records, but in an emergency the hospital will verify your group rather than rely only on a card or memory.

Ask for assistance during the draw if you feel light-headed. Seek help if faintness persists, the puncture site keeps bleeding, or swelling, redness and pain increase. The blood type itself is not an illness. Contact a clinician promptly for the underlying reason the test was requested if you develop severe weakness, breathing difficulty, confusion or rapid worsening.
