Blood-Tinged Sputum With Pneumonia

Pneumonia is an infection or inflammation in the lung’s air sacs. Mucus, immune activity and repeated coughing can irritate nearby small blood vessels, leaving pink, rust-coloured or red streaks in phlegm. A pneumonia presentation often includes cough, fever, chills, tiredness, chest pain when breathing or coughing, and shortness of breath. COVID-19 and influenza can also cause respiratory illness and may overlap with these symptoms, so the pattern alone cannot identify the cause.

Contact a clinician promptly if pneumonia is suspected, particularly if you have breathlessness, chest pain, fever or worsening weakness. Rest, take fluids if suitable for you, and use prescribed medicines exactly as directed. Do not share antibiotics or stop a prescribed course without advice. Keep track of breathing, temperature, alertness and the amount of blood in the mucus so you can report changes clearly.

Call emergency services for severe breathing difficulty, blue or grey lips, new confusion, fainting, inability to stay awake, severe chest pain, or coughing up more than a small trace of blood. Rapid deterioration with fever, clammy skin, very fast breathing or marked weakness can signal sepsis and needs immediate assessment. If symptoms are worsening despite treatment, seek urgent medical advice.
