What should you know about a pregnancy GTT?

The test commonly involves a fasting sample, a glucose drink, and one or more later samples. The pattern helps the maternity team decide whether additional monitoring is needed. An isolated result should be interpreted using the pregnancy-specific laboratory thresholds and the test conditions.

Use the instructions from your maternity team about fasting, water, usual meals beforehand, and regular medicines. Allow enough time to stay at the centre, rest between samples, and avoid strenuous activity. Tell staff promptly if the drink makes you vomit, or if you feel faint, sweaty, or unwell.

Contact your maternity team about the result and any plan for checking glucose at home. Seek urgent assessment for fainting, confusion, severe vomiting, inability to drink, or feeling acutely unwell. Pregnancy symptoms such as reduced fetal movement need prompt maternity advice regardless of the GTT result.

Ask why the test was recommended, whether you must fast, which values were outside range, how often glucose should be checked, and when the result will be reviewed.
