What is a liver function blood test called?

A liver panel may include enzymes released when liver cells or bile ducts are irritated, bilirubin, and proteins made by the liver. The pattern matters more than a single result. Abnormal results can occur with infections, alcohol-related injury, medicines, gallbladder or bile-duct problems, fatty liver and other conditions. Results do not always measure how well the liver is working, and an abnormal panel does not identify the cause by itself. Clinicians interpret it with symptoms, examination, medical history and sometimes imaging.

Give the clinician a complete list of prescription medicines, painkillers, supplements and herbal products. Mention alcohol use, recent illness, abdominal symptoms and any known liver condition. Follow fasting instructions if they are provided; not every liver panel requires fasting. Do not stop prescribed treatment without advice. If a result is outside the expected range, ask whether it should be repeated, which causes are being considered and whether an ultrasound or additional blood test is appropriate.

Seek prompt medical advice for yellowing of the skin or eyes, dark urine, pale stools, persistent vomiting, worsening abdominal swelling, unusual bleeding or confusion. Severe abdominal pain, vomiting blood, black stools or sudden confusion require urgent care. These symptoms should be assessed even if a liver panel has not yet been performed.
