What should you know about blood pressure shortness of breath?

Breathlessness can occur with asthma, acute bronchitis, COPD, anaemia, angina, atrial fibrillation or other heart and lung conditions. High blood pressure itself often causes no noticeable symptom, while very high pressure can accompany serious illness. The pattern matters: breathlessness at rest, when lying down, during exertion, or with wheezing, palpitations, fever or chest discomfort gives a clinician useful clues. A symptom does not identify one diagnosis by itself.

Stop exertion, sit upright and loosen tight clothing. If you have a prescribed reliever inhaler, use it according to your action plan. Record the blood pressure after resting and note the pulse, onset, triggers and associated symptoms. Arrange prompt clinical assessment if breathlessness is new, worsening, or interfering with ordinary activity. Do not drive yourself if you feel faint or severely unwell.

Call emergency services for severe or rapidly worsening breathlessness, blue or grey lips, inability to speak in full sentences, fainting, new confusion, chest pressure, or swelling of the face, lips or tongue. Breathing difficulty after a possible allergen may indicate anaphylaxis. Sudden breathlessness with chest pain or collapse also needs emergency assessment, regardless of the blood pressure number.
